In a twist from what has been a warm winter so far, the southeastern United States and parts of Florida will experience chilly air and even freezing temperatures for a change into midweek. Temperature departures from average for January have topped 5 degrees Fahrenheit in many parts of the Southeast and in some cases have been 10 degrees above normal for the first 19 days of the month.
A new round of travel problems associated with the next winter storm will spread from the central United States to the Northeast following a lull from snow and ice for a time this week. The storm is destined to bring wintry precipitation and travel problems over a broad swath, even though Arctic air in place to start this week will grow stale and trend milder over time. First, a weak storm producing spotty rain and mountain snow in California on...
A Newfoundland woman was left with a car full of snow on January 18 after she accidently left the passenger side window of her vehicle open during a record-breaking snowstorm the night before. Gail Soper recorded this video of her best friend, Lola Parsons, after she discovered her car filled with snow in Conception Bay. Soper told Storyful she and Parsons went outside the morning after the storm to clean up over “6ft of snow in the driveway.” “We went to check our vehicles and we thought we lucked out because both our cars had very little snow around them,” she said. “But when we went around the passenger door of Lola’s car, the window was gone and the car was full of snow!” Soper said at first she and Parsons thought someone had broken into the car and they started taking pictures for insurance purposes. Lola then thought the glass might have been blown in by the wind, but with no sign of broken glass, Lola realized she left the window open. Environment Canada reported the snowfall broke records in the province, with 76.2 cm recorded at St. John’s International Airport on January 17, beating the previous record of 68.4 cm on April 5, 1999. If you feel the ground shaking beneath you in Sandy Springs in the next few weeks, don’t panic.
Science fanatic Jason Zackowski decided to enjoy the negative temperatures in Red Deer, Alberta, on January 14, by performing an outdoor experiment using hot H2O and a water gun. Zackowski has posted videos online of himself and his pals performing various winter science experiments, showing his followers that Canadian winters have much more to offer than just the classic activities such as skiing or snowboarding. In this video, Zackowski’s friend shoots near-boiling water from a water gun into the air where it immediately turned to into steaming ice crystals before hitting the ground. Zackowski explained the principle behind the video saying, “cold air cannot hold water vapor, so when water is thrown into the air, the surface area expands. Tiny particles in the air already cling to the boiling water droplets and rapidly freeze them in a beautiful and amazing show.” Credit: Jason Zackowski via Storyful
Activity from one of Alaska's 80 volcanoes triggered aviation warnings after it began to spew ash and lava over the weekend.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Dust storms, hail and flash floods have battered beleaguered Australian cities in recent days, extreme weather that has diminished the threat from scores of wildfires that continue to blaze across the country’s southeast. Power outages were reported throughout the territory, with over 1,200 calls being made to the Australian Capital Territory Emergency Services Agency. Credit: Debra Champion via Storyful
